Mobile Website Redesign (The Economist)

For three years I was part of the design team at The Economist, first as a consultant and then later as a regular employee.

As part of a project to create a mobile-optimized versions of Economist.com, our team conducted a design workshop that included representatives from design, technology and editorial. These are some of the sketches I produced as a workshop participant.

WIREFRAMES AND MOCKUPS

Mobile Responsive Website (Pharmaceutical Brand)

These wireframes show page layouts, navigation and interaction specifications for a responsive website when viewed on phone-sized screens. The client was a major pharmaceutical company, and the site provided information about one of their drug brands to healthcare practitioners.

ANALYSIS DOCUMENTS

Erroneous Premium Access Analysis (The Economist)

One of my projects at The Economist was migration of user management functions on Economist.com to Drupal from an older system.

While reviewing user roles and permissions in SQL as part of the migration, I discovered that more than one million users had non-expiring roles granting premium access, more than 600,000 of whom weren't paid subscribers. Approximately 17,000 of these users had been active on the site in the previous month.

I reported my findings to business stakeholders using the diagram below.

Erroneous premium access analysis

I determined the roles had been granted erroneously, and then worked with the head of marketing to create an email campaign informing the users of the error and offering them a chance to subscribe in order to continue receiving premium access.

The campaign resulted in several hundred new subscriptions within the first month.

Trip Booking User Flow Analysis (Travel Startup)

For complex user flows, I sometimes prefer to view the flows and use cases as a spreadsheet rather than using only a flow diagram, which helps ensure all cases are covered.

Below is one such document, for a trip booking user flow I designed while consulting for a travel startup.

Demographic Data Collection User Flow Analysis (The Economist)

While I was at The Economist, senior management wanted to reduce the number of required fields for registration on Economist.com, making demographic information collection optional.

As part of the planning process, I created this chart showing the various user flows in which demographic fields were being collected, to determine the impact on existing user flows.

My analysis showed that simply making existing demographic form fields optional would send some users into an endless loop, and that changes to the flow logic were required before the fields could be made optional.

FLOW DIAGRAMS

Print Subscriber Online Activation Flow Diagram (The Economist)

One of The Economist's registration-related challenges was matching print subscribers to new or existing online accounts. These flow diagrams illustrate a proposal to shorten the user flow for a particular use case.
